Hey, Matt, WHO IS JESUS?
Matthew 1.1 “An account of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham:”
SON OF DAVID
SON OF DAVID
Matthew describes Jesus as “Son of David” 8x in his Gospel…more than double what any other Gospel writer does. [This aspect was IMPORTANT for Matthew to communicate to his audience!]
Matthew 1.1 “An account of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham:”
Matthew 12.23 “All the crowds were astounded and said, ‘Could this be the Son of David?’” [Healing demon possessed man…crowd asks]
Matthew 21.9 “Then the crowds who went ahead of him and those who followed shouted: ‘Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!’” [Triumphal Entry]
“Son of David” — KING (of Israel…et al.)
Jesus is rightfully KING…of Kings! [Revelation 19.16 “And he has a name written on his robe and on his thigh: King of Kings and Lord of Lords.”]
KINGDOM OF HEAVEN
KINGDOM OF HEAVEN
Matthew describes “The Kingdom” most frequently in his Gospel as “The Kingdom of Heaven.”
Matthew 3.1-2 “In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea and saying, 'Repent, because the kingdom of heaven has come near!'”
Matthew 13.10-11 “Then the disciples came up and asked him, 'Why are you speaking to them in parables?' He answered, 'Because the secrets of the kingdom of heaven have been given for you to know, but it has not been given to them.'”
[Matthew 13.24, 31, 33]
Matthew 13. 44-46 “'The kingdom of heaven is like treasure, buried in a field, that a man found and reburied. Then in his joy he goes and sells everything he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls. When he found one priceless pearl, he went and sold everything he had and bought it.’”
[Matthew 13.47, 52]
“Kingdom of Heaven” = Regal Eternality
Jesus, the KING of the KINGDOM…will reign forever!
OLD TESTAMENT FULFILLED
OLD TESTAMENT FULFILLED
Matthew, more than any of the Gospel writers, inundates his audience with these words…
“to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet”
Matthew 1.22-23 “Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: See, the virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will name him Immanuel, which is translated 'God is with us.'”
Isaiah 7.14 “Therefore, the Lord himself will give you a sign: See, the virgin will conceive, have a son, and name him Immanuel.”
Matthew 8.16-17 “When evening came, they brought to him many who were demon-possessed. He drove out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick, so that what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: ‘He himself took our weaknesses and carried our diseases.’”
Isaiah 53.4 “Yet he himself bore our sicknesses, and he carried our pains; but we in turn regarded him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted.”
Matthew 21.4-5 “This took place so that what was spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled: Tell Daughter Zion, 'See, your King is coming to you, gentle, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.'”
Zechariah 9.9 “Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout in triumph, Daughter Jerusalem! Look, your King is coming to you; he is righteous and victorious, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”
[also noting that in our previous sections… Matthew 13.10-11(esp. 14-15 were OT [Isa. 6.9-10] fulfillment; and Matthew 21.9 (ref. Psalm 118.25-26)

MATTHEW 28.18-20 “Jesus came near and said to them, 'All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.'”
Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth.
